about

I love the sound of waves on an incoming tide at night. This is a spontaneous performance recorded at dusk on Hornsea beach in East Yorkshire on Wednesday 12 August 2020. During the day, the beach is busy with summer tourists but at dusk it becomes a beautiful and desolate place. The waves sounded gorgeous and dramatic and a sea mist (or fret) enveloped the sea in mystery and solitude. In the growing darkness I played hand percussion, gongs, singing bowl, thumb piano, rocks, pebbles and sand, seaweed and groynes sparingly. The sea breeze teased accidental chimes, shimmers and rustles from the beach, my instruments and various bags I had brought things in. Notes were fumbled and mistakes were made in the growing darkness but somehow it seemed to sound fine. It all paid respect to the waves which were the music I had really come to listen to.
